After years of fighting the fitness craze, I unexpectedly became a member of it after receiving a Fitbit Charge 2 for my birthday. At the time, I wasn’t too impressed, thinking I didn’t need it and wouldn’t use it. But since my son gave it to me, I figured I would wear it for a few days, then hide it with all the macaroni necklaces. Well, that never happened. Why? Because that device, the one that I was so sure had nothing to offer me, changed my life.
Contrary to what I believed, wearing a tracker truly does open your eyes and make health and fitness a priority. I discovered things I never would have known, like how much I toss and turn when I sleep and how much (too much) I sit during the day. So, a year later, I am now the owner of 2 Fitbits (I went and bought the new Blaze a few months ago) and want to share with you the 9 Amazing Ways a Fitbit Can Transform Your Life. Hopefully, after reading it, you’ll join the fitness craze too.
1. Gives You Real Motivation
You may think a tracker can’t or won’t give you the motivation you need, but believe me when I say, wearing a Fitbit is all the motivation you need. Imagine a personal trainer following you around all day, poking and yelling at you to move more, exercise more and eat smarter. Well, that’s what it’s like when you wear a Fitbit.
When you wear one, you can’t get lost in a show, or a bowl of popcorn, because it will start buzzing if you sit too long. Annoying? Yes, but in this case annoying equals effective. The idle alert will keep buzzing until you get up and move.
Oh, and for Blaze users it’s even more annoying, I mean better, because the idle alert will keep buzzing until you walk a predetermined number of steps.
And if that’s not motivation enough, your Fitbit will give you a medal when you reach daily goals. Doesn’t sound like much, but for anyone trying to lose weight it is a difference maker. It makes you feel like you are doing things right, and makes you excited about exercise, not doughnuts
2. It Wakes You Up…. About Health and Fitness
If you’re like me, you probably think you know how healthy you are, or how hard you’re exercising. Well, you don’t, and your tracker will prove it. Since the Charge HR and Blaze both have built-in heart rate monitoring, they can show you just how good, or bad, you are in terms of physical conditioning.
Just like with a scale (blasted things!), the numbers on your tracker don’t lie. Meaning, if you’re exercising too much, or too little, it will tell you. I don’t know about you, but for me, if I’m going to exercise, it better be worth it. The last thing I want is too work up a sweat for nothing.
Your Fitbit will make sure that doesn’t happen and you hit your target heart rate goals, maximizing results. It also helps those who are sick to exercise safely, making sure you don’t overexert.
And as for those steps, you will reach your 1,000 and 10,000 marks in no time. You will find yourself using the stairs more, and doing more around the house, to be active and moving. So not only will you lose weight, but your house will be cleaner than it’s ever been.
3. It Wakes You Up… Literally
It’s nice to sleep in on a cold or rainy day, but sleeping in won’t help you get in shape. That’s why a Fitbit is so great. It has an alarm to wake you up each morning, so you’ll never miss another workout again. Yay!?
I know what you’re thinking: you have an alarm clock already, so how is this different? Well, there are 2 reasons.
First, there is no snooze, no 5 (or 20) extra minutes to sleep. Once it goes off you up. Secondly, the alarm vibrates, so it won’t wake up everyone, just you. Your family will really appreciate that, and so will you once you see all your hard work paying off.
4. Speaking of Sleep…
You may not be sleeping in as much, but with a Fitbit you can track and improve your quality of sleep when you do. Sleep is what helps your body rejuvenate, giving muscles time to heal and refresh. And it’s not just how long you sleep, but how well, that matters. Your body needs time to replenish essential vitamins and minerals, which is what happens when you sleep soundly.
Your tracker will help with that, monitoring and analyzing your sleep patterns to show how deep, or restless, you are. Then you can make adjustments, like no caffeine before bed, to ensure you get a good night’s rest. You’ll be amazed at how good you feel when sleep better. Hey, you may even get up before the alarm…sometimes.
5. It Teaches You About Food
Exercise is great, but it’s just a small part of healthy living. What you eat and drink is a big part of the equation, and a Fitbit can help you with that too. Every Fitbit works with the Fitbit app, which among other things, can track what you eat and drink throughout the day.
Yes, you could log what you eat and drink in a book, but a book won’t be able to tell you all the nutritional information of what you’re eating. The Fitbit app can, giving you totals of calories, fat, carbs and more, so you see can what dietary changes need to be made.
Sounds simple, but you’ll be surprised when you see just how off you are about the calorie totals for some “healthy” foods, like whole wheat bagels. It will help you balance your diet, and also give you recipes and tips to make smarter choices. Just think, if you eat good all week, one wheat bagel on a Sunday morning can be your reward.
6. You Can Set Reachable Goals
One of the biggest advantages to using a Fitbit is that it makes exercise and weight loss manageable and attainable. You can set daily, weekly and monthly goals, giving you a plan to follow that doesn’t seem so unreachable.
Think about it: exercising to lose 40 pounds in 6 months sounds like a long and arduous task. But when you break it up into smaller tasks, like losing 3 pounds in a week or losing 10 pounds by the end of the month, it feels easier to accomplish.
With your Fitbit you can not only set up weekly and daily weight goals, but exercise goals too. You can work up from 100, to 500 steps, or set goals for exercising longer, like from 15 minutes a day to 45. The Blaze even has multi-sport settings, so you can set goals for individual activities, like running a mile in a set time.
Reaching daily and weekly milestones boosts confidence, which is the key to sticking with any exercise plan.
7. Exercise is More Fun
The words exercise and fun may not go together in your brain right now, but they will once you own a Fitbit. With the Fitbit app you can connect with other users and “compete” with each other, spurring you to push harder and making you feel like you are not alone.
Which brings up my other point: once you have a Fitbit, you can join other family and friends who have one and walk, run or do their activities together. Exercise is always more fun with a partner, and you’re more likely to exercise if someone is waiting for you.
Not to mention, getting badges for hitting goals is lots of fun!
8. It Gives You a Sense of Community and Support
When you use a Fitbit, you link up with other users from across the globe, giving you a built-in support system that will also challenge you.
You can help other by sharing your own experiences and learn from their as well. Users will share tips to motivate, recipes and more, giving you more food and exercise options. You have an unlimited pool of knowledge, which can help you reach and set realistic goals.
9. Make Every Step Count
For me, the biggest issue I had with trackers was my belief that “steps” don’t get results. Well they do, in more ways than one. Steps, build up, in both numbers and in terms of building up your stamina. Taking steps every day gets you into a routine and outs you in a fitness frame of mind.
Plus, steps do get results. They burn energy and help increase metabolism, encouraging weight loss and maintenance. Not to mention, all those steps lead you to do more, so you look better and so does your clean house/office.
These are just 9 Amazing Ways a Fitbit Can Transform Your Life. I bet once you get a Fitbit of your own you will be able to come up with even more great benefits. So go out and get one, then come back and tell us all about your experience!
